Technology added $586 billion to the S&P 500 today. Five chipmakers accounted for $320 billion of it.

The S&P 500 rose 1.14% on 17 September, but Technology did nearly all of it: the sector added $586.2 billion, with Nvidia, Micron, AMD, Intel and Broadcom responsible for $320.3 billion of that as chip stocks extended a rebound from Wednesday's Fed-driven selloff.

Every one of the S&P 500's 31 utilities closed lower on 18 September, and so did 26 of 30 consumer-staples stocks and 27 of 30 real-estate names, as the 10-year Treasury yield climbed to 5% following Fed governor Kevin Warsh's hawkish remarks. A semiconductor rally inside Technology was the only thing that kept the index's headline number positive.

Friday's story was that a hawkish Jackson Hole speech hit rate-sensitive stocks. But 30 of 31 S&P utilities fell on Thursday, the day before the speech, on a day the index rose 0.63%.
