Nvidia rose 1.68% on 28 September after adding $150 billion to its buyback, gaining $91.5 billion in market value. The S&P 500's 18 other chip stocks lost $154.3 billion, Qualcomm had its worst day since June, and Meta's $91.8 billion drop cancelled Nvidia's gain almost exactly.

Nvidia added $91.5 billion in market value on Monday, rising 1.68% on the day it announced a $150 billion increase to its share buyback. The 18 other semiconductor stocks in the S&P 500 lost $154.3 billion between them, and only five of them closed higher.
The index itself fell 0.81% market-cap weighted on the site's snapshot, shedding $572.6 billion, with 334 constituents down and 162 up. Without $NVDA it would have fallen 1.02%.
One chipmaker up, the group down
Nvidia's board added $150 billion to its repurchase authorization, CNBC and others reported on Monday morning. Barron's put the total authorization at $235 billion. Reuters framed the announcement as coming while AI chip competition weighs on the stock, and Yahoo Finance's chart of the day showed chip stocks falling as Nvidia bucked the trend.
On the map, that split looked like this:
| Company | Change | Market value change |
|---|---|---|
| $NVDA | +1.68% | +$91.5B |
| $AMD | -3.61% | -$37.2B |
| $INTC | -5.67% | -$36.8B |
| $MU | -2.61% | -$32.0B |
| $QCOM | -7.17% | -$15.5B |
| $AVGO | -0.92% | -$15.5B |
| $SNDK | -3.65% | -$9.5B |
| $MRVL | -3.83% | -$9.0B |
AMD, Intel, Micron and Qualcomm alone lost $121.4 billion, about a third more than Nvidia gained. Taken as a group, the 18 non-Nvidia chip stocks fell 2.19% market-cap weighted.
The five that rose were equipment and analog makers, and none moved much: $TER +0.73%, $KLAC +0.67%, $ADI +0.46%, $AMAT +0.36% and $TXN +0.09%. Together they added $4.6 billion.
The group used here is the S&P 500's chip designers, memory makers and chip-equipment companies: Broadcom, AMD, Micron, Intel, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Analog Devices, Lam Research, Applied Materials, KLA, Marvell, NXP, Microchip, ON Semiconductor, Monolithic Power, Teradyne, Skyworks and SanDisk. Storage-hardware makers such as Western Digital and Seagate are left out.
Outside the S&P 500, Arm fell 8.70% on the site's Nasdaq-100 snapshot; 24/7 Wall St. reported it sinking as the chip selloff deepened during the session.
How unusual each move was
Measured against the price history this site holds, Nvidia's percentage move was ordinary. The stock has matched or beaten a 1.68% gain on 81 days since June 2025, most recently a week earlier, when it rose 2.30% on 21 September. The dollar figure is large because the company is: at $5.53 trillion, Nvidia was 7.7% of the index's value going into the session, so a move of under 2% was worth 0.13 percentage points of the S&P 500 on its own.
The declines stood out more:
- Qualcomm fell 7.17% to $187.48, its worst day since 26 June, when it fell 7.57%. It had risen 3.97% on Friday, a gain AD HOC NEWS tied to the renewal of its Apple licence.
- Intel fell 5.67% to $116.03, its worst day since 18 August.
- AMD fell 3.61%. Separately, Reuters reported on Monday evening that AMD had agreed to buy Fei-Fei Li's World Labs for $8.2 billion.
Meta cancelled Nvidia out
Nvidia was the index's largest dollar gainer by a wide margin; the next, Palo Alto Networks, added $14.2 billion. The largest dollar loser was almost exactly its mirror image. $META fell 4.79% and lost $91.8 billion, its worst day since 30 July. Nvidia and Meta together netted to a $0.3 billion loss, and each moved the index by about 0.13 points in opposite directions.
Meta's drop came on the day CNBC reported it had hired MongoDB chief executive CJ Desai to lead an enterprise unit, and Forbes linked the decline to concerns about AI spending. Meta had risen 11.34% a week earlier, on 21 September.
With both of them in, Technology was the S&P 500's third-worst sector: down 1.04% cap-weighted, losing $299.7 billion, with 21 of its 77 stocks higher. Leave Nvidia out and the rest of the sector lost $391.2 billion.
The rest of the map
Consumer Discretionary (-1.18%) and Financials (-1.16%) were the two weakest sectors; only 11 of 75 financials rose. Three sectors finished higher: Healthcare (+0.29%, with 40 of 60 stocks up), Consumer Staples (+0.28%) and Energy (+0.19%). Reuters reported that stocks fell on Monday as oil prices and Treasury yields rose.
A buyback authorization is permission to repurchase shares over time, not a purchase made on the day. What the map records is how the market priced the announcement on Monday: Nvidia's one-day gain came to about 61% of the new $150 billion authorization, on a day when most of the stocks it is usually grouped with went the other way.
