Seagate and Western Digital each fell 10.2% on October 2 after a Toshiba capacity report. For Seagate it was the fourth drop of about 10% since its June peak.

$STX and $WDC each fell 10.2% on Friday, together erasing $39 billion of market value on a day the S&P 500 gained 0.78%. The drop came after Nikkei Asia reported late Thursday that Toshiba plans to double its hard disk drive supply. It was the fourth time since its June 22 peak that Seagate has lost about a tenth of its value in a single session.
A familiar size of drop
| Date | Seagate | Western Digital |
|---|---|---|
| Jun 26 | −12.2% | −13.2% |
| Jul 2 | −10.4% | −9.9% |
| Jul 16 | −10.0% | −9.2% |
| Aug 6 | +1.8% | −13.0% |
| Oct 2 | −10.2% | −10.2% |
Those are the five sessions since the June peak in which either stock lost about 10% or more. None of them undid the year. Seagate closed at $848.99 on Friday, up 208% from its 2025 close of $275.39. Western Digital closed at $415.29, up 141%.
Western Digital has given back twice as much
The two fell by the same amount on Friday, but they are not in the same place. Seagate is 22% below its June 22 closing high of $1,094.04. Western Digital is 44% below its June 18 high of $746.23.
The gap comes mostly from the days the pair split. On August 6, Western Digital fell 13.0% while Seagate rose 1.8%. Western Digital also had the bigger drop on June 26.
