Over 14-15 October, Nvidia's loss in market value nearly cancelled the whole healthcare sector's gain, and technology as a whole lost more than three times what healthcare added.

Nvidia lost $273 billion of market value on Wednesday and Thursday, 14 and 15 October. Over the same two sessions, the 60 healthcare stocks in the S&P 500 gained $281 billion between them. Reuters described Thursday as traders shifting from AI to healthcare. On the map, one chipmaker's loss nearly cancels the entire sector's gain.

The healthcare side

Healthcare rose 2.45% on Wednesday and 1.93% on Thursday, market-cap weighted. 44 of its 60 stocks rose on both days, and 56 rose on Thursday. The sector now makes up 9.35% of the S&P 500's market value, its highest share in our snapshots, which go back to mid-June.

$LLY did more of the lifting than any other name. It rose 3.62% and then 3.55%, adding $76 billion, or 27% of the sector's two-day gain.

The technology side

The 78 technology stocks lost $949 billion over the same two days, most of it on Wednesday, the day CNBC described as a global tech rout on AI funding worries. Healthcare's gain covered less than a third of that. $NVDA fell 3.16% on Wednesday and 1.84% on Thursday, which on a company its size was enough to match everything healthcare added.

14-15 October Change in market value
Technology (78 stocks) -$949 billion
Nvidia alone -$273 billion
Healthcare (60 stocks) +$281 billion
Eli Lilly alone +$76 billion

The S&P 500 still finished Thursday higher, with 378 of its 500 stocks up. Tech was one of only three sectors that fell.
