Utilities rose 3.06% market-cap weighted on Tuesday, the sector's biggest one-day gain in the 338 sessions of price history we hold, back to June 2025. All 31 utilities in the S&P 500 finished higher, adding $39.0 billion between them.

$CEG jumped 12.25% the day Google announced a 3.6-gigawatt power deal with Constellation Energy. That added $11.6 billion, or 30% of the sector's gain.

The other 28 rose too

Constellation, $VST (+10.8%) and $NRG (+7.0%) are the S&P 500's large independent power producers. Together they added $18.3 billion.

The remaining 28 utilities added $20.8 billion, up 1.86% combined. $PEG rose 4.4%, the largest gain outside the three producers. $NEE rose 2.1%, $SO 2.0% and $DUK 1.6%. Only $AWK, $AES and $EIX gained less than 0.5%, and none fell.

Fox Business reported that Treasury yields retreated from multi-decade highs the same day. So the Google contract was not the only news for the sector on Tuesday.

How rare an all-up day is

Every one of today's 31 utilities rose on only seven days in our history. Tuesday's gain was the largest of the seven.
