Two out of three S&P 500 stocks closed higher on 8 October and the average one gained 0.67%, but five stocks lost $422 billion and pulled the index down 0.45%.

On Thursday 8 October, 337 of the S&P 500's 500 stocks closed higher and the average one gained 0.67%. The index still lost 0.45% of its market value, about $320 billion. That 1.12-point gap between the average stock and the index is the widest the site has recorded since 17 July (our daily records begin in mid-June).
Five stocks did it
$NVDA, $AVGO, $AMZN, $MU and $MSFT lost a combined $422 billion. Leave those five out and the other 495 stocks gained 0.18% together. $NVDA alone lost more than the two best sectors, energy and consumer staples, added between them ($106 billion).
| Stock | Change | Market value lost |
|---|---|---|
| $NVDA | -2.94% | $168.8B |
| $AVGO | -4.35% | $78.1B |
| $AMZN | -2.25% | $63.2B |
| $MU | -4.79% | $58.9B |
| $MSFT | -1.35% | $53.1B |
Technology was the only sector to fall more than 0.5%. It dropped 1.68%, or $497 billion, with 55 of its 78 stocks lower. The other ten sectors added $177 billion between them. The selling came on the day CNN reported that OpenAI's revenue was lower than expected, and Reuters said chip stocks weighed on the index.
What rose
Energy was the strongest sector, up 2.93%, and all 21 of its stocks closed higher. That was the day the Wall Street Journal reported Brent crude up more than 4% on U.S.-Iran tensions and Hurricane Isaias. Consumer staples came next at 2.51%, led by $PM (+4.05%) and $PEP (+3.73%).
